Corpsmember experiences in this Green Career Pathway include:
Our Recycling Across Los Angeles (RACLA) program allows youth from disadvantaged communities to gain professional skills by collecting and sorting recyclable beverage containers from local businesses and government agencies, and at venues like the Rose Bowl and LAUSD schools. Corpsmembers also collect and properly dispose of illegally dumped tires, assist in the collection of electronic waste and ensure used oil collection centers post guidance on the proper disposal of used oil. In the process, the CalRecycle-funded program readies youth for a lifetime of environmental stewardship, and provides various public and private sector partners with a low-cost means of diverting recyclable materials from our landfills.
Our Community Enhancement Teams provide daily service to and other clean-up activities within two major Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) – Chinatown and South Park in Downtown LA – and several Council District offices and redevelopment corridors. These community beautification projects aim to encourage historic preservation, expand recreational and institutional uses, enhance the respective image of each area and promote economic development. Corpsmembers working on these projects not only learn valuable skills and the importance of good customer service, but they also gain an appreciation for keeping our city clean and preserved.
